Introduction:
Product management is a dynamic field with varying responsibilities that differ among product managers. This diversity is what makes product management so intriguing. Different product managers define product management differently due to its dynamism. However, there are six key points that every product manager, regardless of experience level, should consider. I’m Sachin Sharma, and I have over 10 years of experience in product management, having mentored more than 1000 aspiring product managers. In this podcast, I’ll share these points to help both beginners and seasoned product managers in their journey.

Key Points for Product Managers:

  1. Natural Transition: Breaking into the role of a product manager can be challenging, especially for beginners. Many companies prefer candidates with hands-on experience, making it difficult to start from scratch. To overcome this, consider a natural transition. Connect your existing skills to products or volunteer your time to work alongside product managers. Building connections and gaining experience can be valuable steps.
  2. Strike a Balance: Product management is often considered a mix of science and art. It involves data, frameworks, and metrics (the science), as well as communication, storytelling, and inspiring teams (the art). Balancing these aspects is essential for success in this role.
  3. Curiosity: As a product manager, you don’t need to know everything, but you should be curious about how everything works. Embrace curiosity, admit when you don’t know something, and be open to learning from others. Transparency and curiosity build trust and facilitate learning.
  4. Focus on Problems, Not Solutions: It’s common for product managers to jump into solution mode when presented with a problem. However, it’s crucial to understand the problem thoroughly before seeking solutions. Analyzing problems deeply allows you to connect with customers and deliver better solutions.
  5. Look at the Bigger Picture: When making decisions, consider the broader context. Small decisions can have unexpected consequences if you don’t assess their impact on the entire system. Be strategic in your decision-making, aligning each step with your overall goals.
  6. Embrace Failures: Mistakes are part of the journey, and not every day will be perfect. View mistakes as opportunities for growth. Learn from them, iterate, and continually improve your product management skills. Like the product development framework “Build, Measure, Learn,” keep iterating in your journey.
